Formal logic is the cornerstone of what is known as the Logic stage (roughly corresponding to junior high). Logic is the study and practice of correct reasoning. Everyone, to some extent, is a logician, for we all make inferences and deductions, and we all aspire to be consistent in the way we think about the world. Logic helps us make sense of everything – including the Scriptures. The Greek word for “therefore” (a sure indication of a reasoned argument) occurs nearly one thousand times in the New Testament! Using formal logic as a tool, the students study the ordered relationship of the facts and ideas committed to memory in the Grammar stage. Because we desire our students to think clearly and logically, Mars Hill Academy features the study of formal and informal Logic in our 7th and 8th grades. Again, the skill is more important than the subject matter. When students think logically, they are demonstrating understanding (cf. Proverbs 1:5).
