Theater and Music

Creativity and art are both hallmarks of the classical, Christ-centered education at Mars Hill Academy. From PreK to twelfth grade, students learn to observe, interpret, and express life through fine and performing arts.

THEATER

Theater at Mars Hill Academy perfectly complements our students' study of rhetoric, art, music, and the humanities. Truth, beauty, and goodness are the standards that frame our show selections and inspire the creative process.

  • Grammar School
  • Logic & Rhetoric School

Grammar students present short class plays throughout the year and one stage production. Often complementing grammar school literature curriculum, recent stage productions have included: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Treasure Island, and The Phantom Tollbooth.

Mars Hill Academy has developed a local reputation for excellence in theater with popular productions such as:

MUSIC

“The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.”

Johann Sebastian Bach

God’s gift of music is celebrated and enjoyed at Mars Hill in the classroom and beyond. From grammar and science jingles to hymns and choral masterpieces, music plays a vibrant role in the entire student experience at Mars Hill. In music and choir classes, students learn how to play recorders, hand bells, choir chimes, and string instruments and to sing joyfully to the glory of God. They gain an appreciation for many different types of musical compositions and are challenged to sing works in a variety of languages and genres.

  • Choir
  • String Orchestra
  • Concerts

Rhetoric students have the opportunity to grow in their vocal abilities and deepen their understanding of and appreciation for music through participation in a variety of choirs.

  • Rhetoric School Choir (Grades 9 -12)
  • Men’s Choir (Grades 9 -12)
  • Women’s Choir (Grades 9 -12)
  • Chamber Singers (Grades 10-12)

Students in our string orchestras learn to appreciate and play beautiful music together. The strings program introduces students in grades K-8 to the fundamentals of reading and playing music with opportunities to advance their skills through individual instruction and participation in group ensembles.

Twice yearly school concerts showcase the talents of our PK-12 choirs, Chamber Singers, and orchestras, and give students performance experience. The Chamber Singers also delight and entertain at a Madrigal Feast each winter, and a spring orchestra concert features our strings musicians.
